Acupuncture FAQ
Find answers to common questions about our acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine services.
In short
Acupuncture needles are far thinner than injection needles, so most people feel a brief dull ache rather than sharp pain and many fall asleep during the 20–30 minutes of needle retention. Acute problems usually take 3–6 visits over 2–4 weeks; chronic patterns run weekly for 6–8 weeks before tapering.

Before your first visit
Two things make the biggest difference: eat something within the 2 hours before your appointment, and bring a list of every prescription and supplement you take. An empty stomach is the most common reason someone feels light-headed afterwards, and herb-drug interaction is the main safety caution NCCIH raises about Chinese medicine.
- Eat within 2 hours of your appointment.
- Bring your medication and supplement list.
- Wear loose clothing you can roll above knee and elbow.
- Allow 75 minutes for a first appointment.
- Tell us if you are pregnant, on anticoagulants, have a pacemaker or a bleeding disorder.
When acupuncture is not the right answer
Some symptoms need a physician before they need a needle: back pain with loss of bladder or bowel control, progressive weakness in a limb, a sudden severe headache unlike any you have had before, unexplained weight loss, or chest pain. If you arrive with any of these we will say so plainly and send you on. Acupuncture is complementary care — it works alongside your doctor, not instead of your doctor.

Practical Questions Before You Book
Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are a fraction of the thickness of an injection needle. Most people feel a brief dull heaviness or warmth at the point rather than sharp pain, and many fall asleep during the 20–30 minutes the needles stay in. Tell us immediately if anything is genuinely uncomfortable — we adjust.
How soon will I notice a difference?
It depends on what you came in with. Anxiety and stress often shift during the first session — shoulders drop and breathing deepens within 10 minutes. Sleep usually changes within 2–3 weekly visits. Structural pain is slower and is judged over 3–6 visits. If nothing has moved by then, we will say so.
Are the needles clean?
Every needle is single-use, sterile and disposed of immediately after your session. Packs are opened in front of you. For cupping, equipment is sterilised between patients — NCCIH notes explicitly that reusing uncleaned cupping equipment can transmit bloodborne infection.
What should I wear?
Loose clothing you can roll above the knee and elbow, since many of the most-used points sit below them. For back or cupping work we will provide draping. You will not need to fully undress for most treatments.
Can I go back to work afterwards?
Yes, and most of our Midtown patients do. Expect to feel noticeably relaxed for an hour or two, so try not to schedule anything high-stakes immediately after your first visit. Drink water and skip a sauna or very hot shower for a few hours after deep work.
Do you speak Chinese?
Yes. Both practitioners work in English and Mandarin, and this entire site has a Chinese version. Mention your preference when you book and we will schedule accordingly.
Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?
Certain points are avoided in pregnancy and the plan changes accordingly — tell us when you book, not once you are on the table. We coordinate with your obstetrician and will not advise anything that conflicts with their guidance.
What does the first visit cost in time?
Plan for 75 minutes. Roughly 15–20 minutes of that is intake and TCM diagnosis, and the rest is treatment with 20–30 minutes of needle retention. Follow-ups are shorter, typically 45–60 minutes.

NCCIH — Acupuncture: Effectiveness and Safety
Acupuncture has been in use for at least 2,500 years and, per WHO data, is practiced in 103 of 129 reporting countries. A pooled analysis of 20 studies (6,376 participants) found the benefit persisted for a year after treatment ended for every pain condition studied except neck pain.
NCCIH — Cupping (safety information)
NCCIH's cupping fact sheet is safety-focused: cupping leaves temporary marks, can cause skin discoloration or burns, may worsen eczema or psoriasis, and equipment must be sterilised between patients. It makes no effectiveness claims.
